Croatia

Before my husband and I moved to America, we traveled to Croatia, where we stayed in Dubrovnik and Split. To this day, even with the travel in America, Croatia is still my top holiday. I think it was just full of everything I loved to do, and like any European countries it has a different level of beauty to it. Travels in America are breathtaking and Yellowstone and the Rocky Mountains were one of the best trips I’ve taken, but to me Croatia still tops.

We Traveled in the month of May for a birthday holiday – our birthdays are the day after each other. The previous years we would also go away to celebrate. We decided to stay in both Dubrovnik and Split for different reasons.

Dubrovnik

We wanted to explore the city and outstanding medieval architecture and fortified old town. The city also has an elegance to it with beautiful coastal scenery. I was also a Game of Thrones fan at the time, so we explored the cobbled streets and the ancient walls in the old town.

We stayed in this Airbnb – It was so light and airy and the perfect location. It had a little beach within walking distance, near some resorts which we explored one morning. It was also located less than 3km from Old Town. The listing seems to be old and not available to rent which is unfortunate as it was such a cute little apartment.

Things to do in Dubrovnik

  • Game of thrones tour (You don’t necessary need to do the tour, you can do the walk yourself)
  • Dubrovnik cable car
  • Stradun – Historical main street lined with charming shops, cafes and architecture
  • Lokrum island – A nature reserve featuring botanical gardens and a Game of Thrones exhibition
  • Lovrjenac fortress
  • Pile gate – A medieval walled quarter
  • City harbour
  • Gornji Ugao Tower
  • Waterfall tours

Waterfall tours

We went on a waterfall tour near Dubrovnik – I have tried to remember the exact one we went to, even did a Google search and there are a handful and I cannot seem to pin point which one we went to. Either way, it was spectacular; I hadn’t seen anything like it at the time. It had walking trails to view most of the waterfalls. There was also an option to swim in it unfortunately, at the time it was off season to swim but some people did sneak in (my husband included), eventually they were told to get out lol. My husband said the water was ice cold! I highly recommend to go on one of the waterfall tours – they all look amazing!

Split

We explored Split after Dubrovnik as we booked a kayak tour to 3 islands! Our Airbnb was located in the town, when stepping out the front door, you’re there! The listing was sleek and modern and incredibly clean. It was also a 10 minute walk away from the best sand beach in Split. The listing is still available here:

Things to do in Split

  • Blue cave, Mamma Mia and 5 island tour
  • Electric tuk tuk tour
  • Krka waterfall and swimming tour
  • Diocletian’s palace
  • Game of thrones museum
  • Blue lagoon boat party
  • Kayak tour to 3 islands and cliff diving

So my Husband and I at the time were into Kayaking (we’re now into paddle boarding), so we decided to book a kayak tour that explored 3 islands, stopped off for somewhere to eat, and also had the opportunity to cliff dive. It was one of the best days I have ever had. It was so fun and it was incredible to be out kayaking in the ocean for the whole day – literally we didn’t use any other transport. It was definitely a shoulder workout!

The cliff diving was also really great, we also had the opportunity to snorkel in a cave. The tour guide was extremely experienced, always kept within helping distance of the group and incredibly friendly. I cannot remember the exact tour we did, which is a shame because the tour guide was the best. However, i’m pretty sure it was this one:
